Warwick Conferences has announced its new £5.3m venue on the University of Warwick campus will be known as The Slate.  Following completion, the 650sqm blank canvas space will welcome its first corporate client – a financial company - in early December.

The Slate was chosen as the name of the new venue due to its association with natural materials and an ecological approach, which fits with the BREEAM standards of the building architecture. It also conveys a sense of a place where clients can make their mark, reflecting the individuality and flexibility of the space.

Rachael Bartlett, Head of Sales and Marketing at Warwick Conferences, says: “We are thrilled to finally reveal The Slate as the name of our new venue. The name perfectly represents the premise behind the venue – a sustainable and highly flexible blank canvas space, which can be adapted in whichever way is necessary to provide the exact experience a client is looking for.

“The response to the new venue has been fantastic with over £11.5m worth of enquiries, which just goes to show the level of demand for a high capacity, high quality and flexible facility such as this in Central England. We are very much looking forward to welcoming our first corporate client in December and working with them to realise their vision in our new contemporary space.”

Offering 650sqm of highly flexible event space with capacity for 400 delegates seated, the new venue will be available on an exclusive use basis so it can be customised to meet individual needs.

The world’s leading serviced apartment agents, SilverDoor and Citybase Apartments, have appointed Alison Makosz as their Head of Partner Relationships.

The new role was established following SilverDoor’s acquisition of Citybase Apartments in May 2016 and the unification of the two brands’ Partner Relationships teams.

The role will see Alison split her time between the company’s London and Lancaster offices, and involve travelling nationally and internationally to engage with SilverDoor and Citybase Apartments’ property partners.

Alison has a wealth of experience in the hospitality sector. She joins SilverDoor and Citybase Apartments from her role as Director of Sales – MICE at The Belfry Hotel & Resort, Cameron House on Loch Lomond and Village Hotels, and is also Venue Chairman for the HBAA.

She commented on her appointment, “With ambitious long-term plans in place, it’s an exciting time to join SilverDoor and Citybase Apartments. The serviced apartment sector is growing rapidly and I look forward to managing a diverse inventory and relationships with 965 property partners around the world.”

SilverDoor and Citybase Apartments Managing Director, Marcus Angell, commented, “I’m very pleased to have appointed Alison as our first Head of Partner Relationships. She’s a talented and well-respected professional in the business travel sector and I’m confident that she’s the ideal person to manage our growing Partner Relationships team.”

More than 250 guests flocked to the Barbican yesterday for a night of celebration and intrigue following the significant refurbishment of the Frobisher Rooms and Level 4 of the Centre.

The refurbishment of the Frobisher rooms and Level 4 was part of a wider development during the summer and the Fabulously Barbican event ensured the new-look spaces were showcased to many meetings and events professionals. Those attending the event included the likes of Sony, BBC, Vodafone, HBAA and Capita.

“We want to strengthen the connection between the Centre’s main conference and meeting facilities with its art spaces and the event certainly helped us showcase these developments, in particular the way the spaces flow together and create a seamless event experience,” commented Jackie Boughton, Head of Events at the Barbican. “The idea of our Fabulously Barbican evening was to give guests a real taste of what they could expect from hosting a meeting, conference or event at the Centre. It was a wonderful night and it was great to network with some of the industry’s finest professionals. The success of the evening certainly shows the Barbican is a much-loved venue and I’m very excited that these developments will offer even more to the events offering here.”

The event itself started in the Conservatory Terrace on Level 4 of the Barbican for drinks before guests enjoyed a showcase tour of the developments around the Frobisher Rooms. The tour finished in the Conservatory where guests could network whilst enjoying canapes and champagne.

Victoria Morrison, Gorkana’s Head of Events & Marketing Manager commented: "Coming to the Barbican feels special, it is steeped in the arts and history. Coming here is not like any other event, it is a special moment in time and not just because it is an architect's paradise. We use it regularly for events as the auditorium is one of the best and largest in the City. We trust the people, in fact the staff make it what it is and we will continue to return, particularly after the refurbishment which has added significant value to the product.”

Edward Poland, co-founder of Hire Space added: "The Barbican has always been a stunning venue but the refurbishment has added a real element of sophistication and we expect to return time and again with a variety of clients from the professional services, retail, legal and marketing sectors.  Above all else though it is the staff that continually impress and deliver, ensuring we receive consistently positive feedback from clients."
